Vietnam with the world's IP - Oneyear lookback
2018 marked a new milestone of Vietnam’s foreign relations in IP activities when it took over the President of WIPO General Assembly position for the first time. This is one of the most important achievement of the NOIP in terms of international integration and at the same time, demonstrating Vietnam’s position in the world’s multinational forum about IP. Other bilateral cooperations with different countries’ National IP Offices also marked Vietnam’s development in the field of IP.
1, In relation with WIPO
During the past year, Vietnam had actively participated in a number of WIPO’s spcialized meetings such as WIPO’s Committee on Development and IP, WIPO’s Intergovernmental Committee on IP and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore, Standing Committee on the Law of Patents, Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications, Working Groups of the Hague Union,…
In addition, WIPO also assisted Vietnam in developing National IP Strategy, IP Initiation Project to form a network of supporting centers with respect to innovation and technology transfer at universities and research institutes.
Over the past year, WIPO also supported Vietnam in implementing “Modernizing IP Management system” (WIPO IPAS) which aims to shorten drastically examination process of industrial properties. The system also provides NOIP with the most updated information to related partners as well as the public. IPAS system is expected to operate partially in the 2nd quarter of 2019 and with full functions in 2020.
2, In relation with other economic communities in the region
Also, Vietnam has actively participated in many regional meetings of APEC or ASEAN, demonstrating its position in these communities.
3, And bilateral cooperations
Vietnam also cooperated with a diversified partners such as Patent Prosecution Highway with Japan Patent Office, Korean IP Office or European Patent Office. Via those prosecution highways, the NOIP shall shorten patent registration examination which is expected to promote other innovation activities, technology transfers and finally favor the economic and investment relationship and other countries. Besides, the NOIP maintained and expanded cooperation relationships with other IP Office Department such as Laos, European, France, UK and Cuba.
In addition, the NOIP also started up launching other projects to support registration of several geographical indications in an aim to facilitate Vietnamese agricultural and handicraft products accessing Japanese and Korean markets.
Enhancing the NOIP’s workforce competence via training is also vital mission which several trainings were held last year in connection with WIPO, EPO, Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore and Australia,…
It can be said that international cooperations with respect to IP in 2018 were helpful for the development of local IP activities.
